Showtime's documentary celebrating the 40th anniversary of Michael Jackson's landmark album needed a title sequence. Fifteen seconds to set the tone for a film about how one recording changed everything — and how it's still changing everything.
The concept was simple: sound becoming gold. A particle system originates at a vintage studio microphone, flows through the act of recording — from voice captured to analog tape to vinyl — and settles onto a record, gilding it as it lands. The final frame is a gold-plated record bearing the "Thriller" script in Michael's own hand.
When the Jackson Estate, the documentary's directors, and its producers saw it, the response was immediate: "This is beautiful. We have no notes."
Thriller: 40 premiered on Showtime on December 2, 2023. It now lives on Paramount+.
